OneDrive

Anyone use MS OneDrive for back up? I thought it might be a good idea, so 5 days ago I clicked on the button that MS invited me to select. Well, apart from too many changes in the appearance of files on my PC I found something else when I "unsynced" One Drive yesterday. My careers ( I have several) in Links 2003 were all wiped out. So were all my saved shots, in fact my documents\Links 2003 folder had been completely emptied. I also use Flight Simulator 2004. Same thing, all my saved flights and flight plans had disappeared from the documents\FS2004 folder. The MS Support pages suggests these can be restored from my One Drive Recycle Bin. There doesn't seem to be one, probably I would need to resync OneDrive to access it. Which I really don't fancy doing after the problems it has caused already.

Well I THINK I managed to recover everything after a search of MS Support (OneDrive) which has instructions for file recovery if THEIR software deletes things it shouldn't. But why should this have happened in the first place? Beware!!

I have removed one drive from all of our computers here. Made a mess of my wife's pc and now finally got it sorted out. It may work for some but it's not for me.

Thanks Jim. MS of course have a long history of releasing unfinished software for a gullible and unsuspecting public to beta test it for them. I should have known better than to download software on impulse without reading reviews first.

I'm glad you were able to recover your data, Colin.

I had a similar experience with OneDrive and I no longer use OneDrive or any cloud sync/back-up. If it's just a 'simple' backup, that is fine. I've run into times when deleting from the cloud deletes the file from your local computer and that wasn't what I wanted to do. The same thing with iTunes, as I never liked the idea of deleting something from the cloud deletes it off my computer .... I guess if you're willing to live entirely off the cloud and basically have nothing on your local computers it makes a bit of sense, but I don't do that, nor am I willing to pay someone else to keep my data (once you exceed the free data limit). Anytime the cloud or the computer or any software thinks it knows how to handle my data better than I do, I stop using it.
