Before you guys and Glenn Braden...

Postby GoesForIt on Wed Jan 22, 2025 7:07 pm

... jump me on it, I apologize for not mixing Torrey Pines North/South. I see that Glenn has a 2023 version of the North Course and it just slipped past me.

Hopefully, we'll all be around next year... or I may work it in for one of the tourneys where Links doesn't have the IRL course.

Again, sorry

Excellent first rd by DirkPitt, C/C. This couse has some long holes and if you are off the fairway you are just hoping for a par. I was the worst off the tee in the first rd from those that have started. On this course there are also a couple of holes that the pin is just on top of a ridge in the green. Hit short and the ball runs back down away from the hole. I even hit 3w off a couple tees but only to have a long iron into the green and even a little miss snap can miss the green. Good luck guys.

Summed up very well. Haven’t seen DP’s round yet ( don’t like to look lol) but Torrey is always a tough scoring course and as you say a miss snap anywhere can easily mean bogey.

I know (for me) couldn't miss the snap in Rounds 1 and 2... and couldn't hit the snap in rounds 3 and 4.

Roller coaster first round for me.Played great for the front 9 with a decent snap going and mostly safe off the T. Got a slight stutter on the next T shot and didn't snap at all on the down swing OOOPS. The drive squirted right and went 150 yards... further than I expected and in play surprisingly. One 3W later, a chip and a putt so very happy with a par.

The 17th is a hole thats bitten me before on pro so Im aiming right to avoid the OB on the left. Another Ooops as I snapped very early to go OB anyway. Dropped 250 something short but in US open rough, uphill and lots of right to left. Is US OPEN rough just like rough on this course? I really dont know.

I didnt think I could reach from it anyway but i hit a beauty 22 feet I think straight past the hole and then sank a tricky putt for par. Best par ever LOL

Got to the 18th with 265 to the pin 2nd shot. no way I was missing left so predictably missed the snap righ and into sand for an up and down birdie. Same hole at the end of the pro even I had a similar approach which I did miss left trying a monster 2W with the pin at the back. How it cleared the water I don't know as it ended on an upslope very close to the water. Sure wasn't going that way again.

ROUND 2 I've a feeling that Torrey is actually a good test and the right sort of test for champ challenging. As Harpo said plenty of long T shots needed and long approaches. Fairways not exactly narrow but not wide enough that you can aim at the middle and survive a miss snap. And definitely pin positions in tricky positions bearing in mind the slopes and ridges.

I sat off in round 2 buoyed by the good fortune in round 1 ,started great with birdies then that nasty one I do a little too often with an early snap off the T on 3. Torrey is not made for going left off the T so another OB. The drop seemed to only allow to be in the rough and there's a double to start with.

After a quick punch of the wall back to busines and a run of good holes before hitting a wall for a few where I couldnt get the snap again. No worry for a change on 17 where from the middle i hit to 4 feet for biride. Should have been but I hit it 7 feet past ..another ooops. 18 made up for it thankfully.

On that question about whether US Open Rough is heavy or just rough. Ive decided its just rough. Had a chip for a birdie on one hole, played it as heavy from about 22 feet and went 15 past the hole!!!!!

I had a better snap in C/C than in Pro. Hit a couple upslopes that didn't make it up and spun back down. Miss a couple putts there and a stupid kick in that I rushed and missed. Three pars in Pro is a no no. Just hope I can take a 3rd place there.

To me it seemed like the U S Open rough played like deep rough. Maybe there was a readme file in the download that states that? But then again, I never read the readme txt file.

Just for the record I really don't like the 17th at Torrey Pines lol basically happy going to that hole in round 4 and once again the gremlins hit me with an early snap and OB. PLugged lie from the drop at 245 yards. Sand for the 4th shot didnt get out well but holed a silly chip from the Open rough.
Thought I had got rind of the gremlins on 15 . Massive fairways easy T shot and oooops a very late snap found sand on the fairway to the right of the one I was aiming at. Crazy game

Nice last rd by Dirk to just edge me out. Birdied 16 and 17, two tough holes but then just pared the last as I did. Roy gave us a shot this week.

Thought my score wouldn’t hold on this week with you guys playing well and that 17th giving me real problems. Managing a par and only a bogey on there when I went OB twice was absolutely key for me. Chipped in for bogey on round 4 LOL
