Well, there still seems to be a healthy level of participation at the Pro Level if you're looking for more competition. My own opinion---it's more of a function of it being a 20+ year old piece of software and we're all getting older and Father Time is undefeated, and we won't be able to do much to recruit young people into the game. I'm guessing at 63 (as of this Sunday), I'm one of the younger players now!
For me, having to shoot -50 to win is not all that appealing. I prefer the courses and situations where a little bit of IRL knowledge about golf is helpful and -9 is a really good score for a round. Fortunately, with Torrey and Pebble and Riviera coming up, I enjoy them very much.
For scoring challenges, I know there's Elite and I dabbled with it long ago, but actually the lack of 3D vision without grid lines I never enjoyed.
As to competing, except for the occasional magic moment like last year at Riviera when Roy's clubs got lost in the airport, I have to content myself with the infrequent really good round such as Round 3 of this week's tourney and see how that one stacks up to everybody.
Otherwise, I'm mostly competing with myself trying not to psych myself out about hitting the putt snap
Cheers,
Ronnie

When I started the FedEx deal we had a lot of players at first, but this season, so far, I get the feeling players are discouraged because Higgi, DirkPitt, Harpo and MM dominate.
I satisfy myself to find others who are at my level and make my own tourney out of the... but those players appear to be drifting away.
I've never really liked the the idea of handicap events. I've always felt like, if you can't compete, get better. Unfortunately, I feel like I'm at about the pinnacle of my abilities... which get worse with age.
