PLSA Dilemma

Postby GoesForIt on Mon Jan 20, 2025 8:54 am

It's not going to happen, but I suspect that making the PLSA a handicap event might well draw more players.

When I started the FedEx deal we had a lot of players at first, but this season, so far, I get the feeling players are discouraged because Higgi, DirkPitt, Harpo and MM dominate.

I satisfy myself to find others who are at my level and make my own tourney out of the... but those players appear to be drifting away.

I've never really liked the the idea of handicap events. I've always felt like, if you can't compete, get better. Unfortunately, I feel like I'm at about the pinnacle of my abilities... which get worse with age.

Well, there still seems to be a healthy level of participation at the Pro Level if you're looking for more competition. My own opinion---it's more of a function of it being a 20+ year old piece of software and we're all getting older and Father Time is undefeated, and we won't be able to do much to recruit young people into the game. I'm guessing at 63 (as of this Sunday), I'm one of the younger players now!

For me, having to shoot -50 to win is not all that appealing. I prefer the courses and situations where a little bit of IRL knowledge about golf is helpful and -9 is a really good score for a round. Fortunately, with Torrey and Pebble and Riviera coming up, I enjoy them very much.

For scoring challenges, I know there's Elite and I dabbled with it long ago, but actually the lack of 3D vision without grid lines I never enjoyed.

As to competing, except for the occasional magic moment like last year at Riviera when Roy's clubs got lost in the airport, I have to content myself with the infrequent really good round such as Round 3 of this week's tourney and see how that one stacks up to everybody.

Otherwise, I'm mostly competing with myself trying not to psych myself out about hitting the putt snap :D

Cheers,

Ronnie

I don't think a handicap event will draw anymore players. Seems that the older the players get, the easier modes are being played. Going to Champ from pro is a big step up that most won't make let alone add the Challenge mode makes it worse. I was surprised to see JRT play a pro event the other week. I don't see the field size getting any bigger in the events now.

I wonder if someone did a YouTube video of playing some rounds with a link to the LSPN site would draw in some more players?

Tik-tok. Then we could see how we'd fare against a bunch of teenage girls.

If we were going to try to recruit some new and younger folks to the game, that seems like it would be the way to do it.

Not specific to just the PLSA, but...
I don't think recruiting new players will work as is. Most new players aren't going to come off the street
and shoot low 50s for 4 rounds - especially at the amateur level. They'd take one look at the leaderboard
and probably be turned off. They're most likely looking for tournament they can enjoy being competitive
with their 65-70 per round score. It is what it is. Just my 2-cents.

yeah Jim, i decided to dabble in some Pro a few weeks ago, instead of playing Ammy - a new beginning for the New Year !
first time back in Pro after 6 or 7 years !

you know after playing in that pro event the other week, i ran back to Ammy with my tail between my legs - just can't hit that bottom mark anymore like i used to "back in the day" - mostly not even close :( Just getting too old now :x ........ "the advancing years catching up" !

Ammy is so much more enjoyable to play - more relaxing.
and the challenge is there with some great players.

Recruiting new players? It will be hard to keep the ones playing now the way this place has been run the past 2 calendar years. Once something screws up it seems to stay that way for months since only the PLSA gets any attention from the admin. Maybe i will see y'all in May.

Maybe Mark is looking for volunteers to help run the site.
