Waialae Hole 2

Postby Harpo on Mon Jan 13, 2025 12:59 pm

This hole gets me at least one time a tourney. Hit in the fairway to far left and have to play a hook around the tree. To far right and get into the sand. C/C, hit the tree at least once. With the tees up in round 2 either lay back or take the chance of driving the ball past the tree in the fairway.

Had a couple of strange holes in my first pro round here. Hole two, hit into the sand off the tee. Big slope to the right. Did not play enough left and left a 44' putt for birdie. Yep, nothing but the bottom of the cup. (Lucky). Hole 7 got an ace with a str8 in dunk shot. 3 holes later thought I had another dunk but hit the hole and bounced away into the rough. My only par.

But that second hole just gets me every now and then.

Thought immediately I had that same problem but I must have done similar on a different hole. Can’t think which one but I couldn’t really try to hook or fade it round so just whacked it int9 the branches and hoped. Went 30 yards but at least on short grass.
Personally I don’t like the course at all as I can’t use the green analyser. Have to attack greens not really knowing what to expect on landing at times but the greens at least aren’t too bendy. Got through the pro event as quick as I could while I remembered the GA problem. Will have to do the same for the C/C tourney tomorrow.

Round 2 C/C hole 2 sorted me out. Hit a tree off the T but stayed in bounds somehow. Hit atree with the next shot and went OB. Managed to find the green next shot, not a clue how with an angry miss snap. Then holed a 62 foot putt that I'm sure would have gone at least 10 feet passed if it hadnt hit the back of the hole, jumped a bit and fell in LOL

And i accidentally used the GA twice but closed it very quickly as I realised. Fingers crossed it doesnt come back to bite me as it has before.

At some point, should give Waialae CC 2021 serious consideration. I've played several practice rounds and the asthetics are much more pleasing and I found the greens/pins as good if not better than 2019 version. According to the readme file, its a course originally created by Tom Hagen in 2007 (I think) and was tweaked by Adelade over on LinksCorner in 2021. I have no connection with this version, but, I much prefer it to either of the versions I did. Give it a try some time: https://linkscorner.org/courses/course.php?crz=2620

This version has my vote. Played a round and all those stupid trees are not a problem now. I don't know how anyone else played hole 15 or 16. I always just hit over top of the trees and let the trees knock the ball down onto the fairway for a short iron into the green. What do you say Doug, give it a try.

I have always played like you on 16 through the trees but every so often the ball doesn’t go through and can leave you in rough and trouble. So in my last c/c round I bottled it and played wide right with a 4W for safety. Couldn’t afford trouble..and it paid off

Re: Waialae 2021,
on further testing, it turns out almost all of the seam blends are badly messed up - not visually, but internal labeling has LAVA selected as a blend around the fairway and Running Water for a blend around the green; same type of problem around the bunkers. Much work would be needed to fix the course.

I'd donate money to have Glenn Braden go through and refresh Waialae. Some of those hugh, fat palms are meant to be no more that a few feet high and much smaller. I watched the Sony and there simply are not palms (see picture) of that description. And the author has put them all over the place hanging over tees and fairways.

I planted palms like it in 1980 in the front of my house in 29 Palms, CA (picture of real palm, google street view). It's only about 2 ft taller today than when I planted it.
