Unable to save shots

Postby rwoodworkr on Wed Aug 27, 2014 10:09 am

For the last couple of months, I have been unable to save my shots (or at least find the files). I click the 'saved shot' option, it takes me to the proper window, I name the file and click save. When I go back to try to view the shot, it doesn't show up. I've checked the saved shot folder in windows, and the file is not there. I've searched my harddrive and the file doesn't seem to exist. I am able to save and view other's saved shots by saving them to the 'saved shots' folder. Short of re-installing Links, anyone have any ideas how to fix this? Is there a way to point the saved shot option to a particular folder on the hard drive? Thanks in advance.

Hi Rick,

In a Windows 7 set up, my files are located in the library Documents/My Documents/Links 2003/Saved Shots

There doesn't appear to be any way to move around the directory structure.

If you combined data from an old PC set-up, search for the Links 2003 folder under any Documents or My Documents folers you have. Also not sure why you would need to, but some Links folders will only appear if you change files and folders from hidden to visible in the general settings for how Windows shows its Window structure (under Tools>Folder Options within any library window).

Thanks for the reply, Mike. I do have hidden folders showing, but I don't think the Links 2003\Saved Shots folder would be hidden anyway. I've done a search of both of my installed hard drives, and there is no sign of any shot that I have tried to save. It must be a software glitch, which means....reinstall!

Is there a limit to how many you can save?

Don't save the bad ones. My good ones don't take up much space.

Nope, I just added a couple from other players in the last week or two. I'm just unable to save my own from in the game.

Just thinking Rick.... see if you are able to save from a newly created player (not a cloned one to be on the safe side).

It could be that your player file has become corrupted and you won't notice too much wrong unless you are looking at items such as stats.

Not a problem that I've experienced but reading this it is reminiscent of other posts I've seen where the issue is related to user permissions and the files being saved elsewhere if the game is not 'run as administrator'.

Could this be the issue? I'm not really up on the details but I seem to recall that Armand has posted a few times with details.

Also maybe check to see if the folder is "read only"...

Bingo, we have a winner. You were spot on, Steve. I ran the game as administrator, and voila, I was able to save and view a shot. I still don't know if my other attempts were saved in some nether-region of my computer, but it seems that my thorough searches of my hard drives would have found them, so it appears they were not saved at all.
Thanks again for all the ideas. The hive mind comes through!

I'm not sure if the \VirtualStore directory is included in your searches (I would have thought so, but I find WIn7 search to be somewhat lacking - or at least my understanding of it is lacking!). Try navigating to the folder:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ProgramData\Links 2003\Saved Shots
and see if they exist there. If so, you can simply move (or cut and paste) the SHT files to your current saved shots folder:
C:\ProgramData\Links 2003\Saved Shots
and you should see them when you run Links as an Administrator.

Thanks Armand. I checked the virualstore directory and found a Links2003 folder, but it didn't contain any .sht files. It did contain .mop files and some screenies I'd been looking for. How they got there, I'll never know.
