i've been trying to also.. but stopped.
in your PROFILE, at the bottom it asks for the URL... i am guessing your avatar needs to at a web site, and then you just point to it by typing in that location.

as you can see i've not done this~
but its sounds right :)

correct. i've just been right clicking on the image i wanna use for properties, then highlighting, ctrl-c (copying), and ctrl-v (pasting) into the profile.

now i'm not exactly sure what the legal ramifications are for some sites. essentially, everytime that avatar pops up, you're using bandwidth belonging to the hosting site. ideally, i guess the correct thing to do, providing you have permission from the owner, is to copy the image to a location YOU pay for, or a free/paid hosting site, then link your avatar to that.

edit: i have several locations i could have copied my avatar(s), but i've been too lazy to do it yet. if ever. if i really hafta.

how many of us remain who don't have a sig or a slick corporate-style logo?

how hard does a bundle of recieved knowledge quasi intellectual symbolism have to work to produce enough real weight of thought to justify the bandwidth necessary to express it? lw

This ...
... its width can be no greater than 80 pixels, the height no greater than 80 pixels, and the file size no more than 6 KB.

doesn't seem to hold true. I resized mine in order to get within the limits, but I've noticed that Terrel's is oversized and still displays properly.

How'd you get away with that, T?

hilariously, the censor program busted my expression: [censored] ani, followed by an "s" . ani is good but don't put an s after it. lw

Lots of times people have storage space and bandwidth and just do not know it, to store there avatars. Many internet service providers include a small amount web-space where one can store files and such. This space would be included with each subscription purchased.

For instance our family is with Cogeco Cable here in Canada and I think ( It may have changed now ) each subscription gets seven ten meg accounts, to store files of ones choosing. ( Ten meg for each email account )

So if you are looking for space on the internet to store your avatar or a few small files, you may already have it but just don't know it.

Yes you are correct this does not work for remote avatars, only avatars that are uploaded to the site. ( That feature is disabled here for bandwidth reasons I would assume )

But I do have a hack kicking around were the remote avatar's size is checked to make sure that the avatar does not exceed the limits that you have set via the Admin Panel.

It works very well, something like that may need to be added if peoples avatars get to large, as this can slow the loading of pages a great deal.
