Disaster - how do i reinstall Links 2003?

Went to play Links this morning and - disaster, somehow it has disappeared from my system. There is no evidence of it anywhere. I have tried system restore to no effect so have tried to reinstall from the original CD's. The installation seems to go fine, I install the 1.07 patch and the nVidia patch but when I run the program I get a black screen with a smallish window - also completely black which doesn't change. I have edited the registry for resolution to no effect. It was working just fine yesterday and I've made no changes to my rig, I am stumped. Any advice would be hugely appreciated. Are the two patches I mentioned all that I need to install or are there more?

My first thought: Did Microsoft do any updates since yesterday?

Hi Pete,
I currently have updates turned off as having problems with them failing to install. Switch them back on after a few days and the updates usually go through ok. Have finally got the game going again and managed to get back online and played an Amanti Tour round fine. Still a couple of annoying things to get sorted back to how I'm used to playing but at least I'm back on the tee!

My own d*mn silly fault really - I have been playing only modern games recently and I'd forgotten to set the compatability for Links. Vista pack 2 works just fine. Now a couple of niggles to finish sorting - and all is well again.

Just one last niggle and I have Links back exactly as it was before. The niggle - trifling I admit but just annoying - when I first load Links I get a whirling silver Microsoft studios splash screen before I get into the game - is there any way of getting rid of this, I didn't have it in the game prior to the reinstall.

Yes there is, go into sound settings and take the tic out of play interface music... bottom right.

As far as how your problem began it makes me wonder if you have Microsoft's cloud( one drive )active on your computer. If updates are turned off.

Hi Echoes,

I actually discovered that I had left my optical drive connected with the Links 2003 cd one in and this is what produces the Microsoft splash screen when I start Links. I disconnected the drive (I only blew the dust off and connected it so I could reinstall the original Links 2003 cd's} and the splash screen disappeared. So all is now back to what it was.
