sorry, chris, but i disagree. i don't think it's so much applications, e.g. firewalls, clients are running, as it is how the servers between you and the game server handle/maintain persistent ip connections.

the game server will buffer persistent requests, then when it reaches a point, it will start disconnecting them. most operators don't like pipelining for this reason. i'd be really interested to see mark's statistics on server activity and the number of links disconnects.

disclaimer: this is just a theory, and by no means reflects the policies of the management (8

Just looked at chrispy's tourney he was playing. It looks like he is either already trying to play offline or he has serious connection issue's (ports, privacy, security, permissions, links connection settings, etc) as it shows him after all he went through at round 1 hole 0 . Oh well, too bad.
I reserve the right to be completly wrong

free, as you remark, if chrispy is playing offline already, he is not reconnecting properly after the round to submit stats. that accounts for the hole 1: 0 score, even after repeating round one. after an offline round, the stats still continue to be carried by the game until the player exits links. at that point the stats [and the game] are gone forever.

i never exit links (and for the new guys: that's different from an alt/tab minimization) after a game until i get the "stats have been accepted by the server" message. and playing offline, i have never lost a game from june of '03 to the present. lw

[edit] if you get a "stats were unable to be submitted" message after playing offline, even though you followed all the instructions, you can alt/tab out of the game and check the home page to see if your stats went through before exiting links. if your score shows up on the home page, whatever submission message you are getting after a tour round, your stats went through fine. if your stats didn't go through, click on the minimized game tab for links, rejoin the tour, and you will be offered a chance to submit stats.

what's a PEBCAK Bruce ?

similar to a PIECOST ?

Or, "what's a henway"?

PEBCAK, one of many terms used in Internet chatting, stands for "problem exists between chair and keyboard," meaning it's a problem in user understanding or behavior rather than something wrong with hardware or software. The term is sometimes used by help desk people since it's a common class of problems.
