because i'm new to the tour games,if i click on the multiplayer tab in the game settings before starting a round in a tourney,do i have to wait for other players in the tourney to join or can i just go ahead and play as a single or should i use the single player tab to exclusively play alone?

If you wish to play alone you must set it to single player

actually there's no need to click on multiplayer to join in on a tourney. you click online. that will welcome you to the links tour. if you haven't chosen a name and a password you will need to. you will then see the tourneys that guys have posted. when you find one that interests you just click on it. it's not head to head competition, different players play at different times at their leasure. tourneys do have a limit to players and a time frame to play it in. right now its basically just for kicks until the tour starts.
